The Green Lifestyle

Welcome to the Green Lifestyle section of the Brightwater Commons. Your resource center to Environmental interesting links, desktop backgrounds, discussions, opinion polls, and more.

What's New

The Brightwater Commons team started the sustainability journey four years ago with a carbon footprint audit (including water and waste) and reduction and offsetting program. Several of the major milestones and achievements have been reached. The Brightwater Commons' Going Green Campaign has won two coveted South African Council of Shopping Centres (SACSC) awards. The first was a Gold Footprint Award (in the Integrated Category) followed by the SACSC's Spectrum Award, the highest accolade honouring achievements in innovation, creativity, vision and excellence.

To date the following material has been recycled: 400 tons of glass. 350 tons of paper, 150 tons of plastic, 60 tons of tins/cans and 300 tons of mixed recyclables not sorted on site. Brightwater Commons has also installed three reservoir tanks that capture all storm water and three boreholes. With a capacity of 250 000 Litres there is no irrigation bill due to these tanks and both watering outlets are used to fill the river system. Therefore, most of the centre's water is kept on site and reused.

Recycling Update

Brightwater Commons is proud to announce that we have partnered up with a well-known South African recycling company called REMADE.

As part of the new change we have decided to consolidate the recycling banks into one area. The area will be behind entrance 4 - Woollies and Virgin Active Entrance close to Cross Street. The new venue will be open from Monday the 22nd of November.

Vermiculture

No doubt, the economic situation has impacted on the pockets of many people and the trend that landscapers are currently seeing in the requests from their middle income clients is the choice to include more fruit trees and vegetable spots in their gardens. Homeowners are also investing in earthworm bins and recycling their left-over food and organic waste through vermiculture in their gardens as earthworm compost.
