India Day Celebration at Brightwater

Families and friends are invited to join The Brightwater Commons for a delightful celebration of India Day on Saturday 21st August. This colourful event, presented by the India Club, will take place from 12:30noon to 5pm.

This year's theme will be Festivals of India, and the vibrant programme will feature an array of spectacular performances of traditional songs, dance and skits. Included in the line-up will be Bihu dance and Bihu folk songs; the colourful Gidda dance; the classical Indian dance of Odissi; and renditions of various traditional songs from different parts of India. There will also be an Afro-Indo music and dance spectacular set to thrill audiences from start to finish; and the Dahi handi preformed by a group of enthusiastic youngsters.

Artists will include the India Club , Tribhangi Dance Theatre, Bengali Association (BASA), Maharashtra Mandal of South Africa, Drisha Music Academy, Spicy Bollywood Dance Academy , Johannesburg Yuvak Mandal, the Johannesburg Indian Women's Association (JIWA).

The event will also feature a variety of stalls specializing in delicious and spicy Indian cuisine; as well as stalls showcasing traditional clothing.

The event will give the Indian community an opportunity to commemorate it's roots, whilst allowing westerners to experience the beauty, richness and diversity of the Indian culture.

India Day is a commemoration of the anniversary of Indian Independence Day (15th August), as well as a commemoration of the 150 years that Indian Settlers have been in South Africa. This will be the 64th anniversary celebration of India Day.
