Year of the TIGER

Chinese New Yar (Podcast)

Families and friends are invited to join The Brightwater Commons for a celebration of the Chinese New Year on Saturday 20th February. This prestigious occasion, presented in conjunction with the Chinese Embassy, will feature a colourful programme of traditional performances from 1pm to 5pm. Visitors can also enjoy an array of delicious Chinese foods and see various cultural exhibitions.

Opening the event will be the most popular dance synonymous with the Chinese New Year - the Dragon Dance, a striking piece certain to delight visitors. Following this will be a performance by the Arts Troupe of Beijing; a Fan Dance; a Poi Dance; and a spectacular Lion Dance performed to the energetic beat of drums and percussion instruments.

Next in the line up will be the Many Hands of Buddha - a fascinating performance that'll leave one gaping. This will be followed by a martial arts demonstration, and the colourful umbrella dance. The event will culminate with the song "Kung Fu Fighting" where visitors will be invited to sing and clap along. Certain dances and performances will be musically backed by South African band Out of the Blue.

With actor Craig Urbani as MC, this exciting event will give members of the Chinese community a chance to commemorate the Chinese New Year whilst simultaneously allowing westerners to experience a part of the Chinese culture.

In addition to the entertainment programme will be various exhibitions to include traditional art and craft items, Chinese products, and mouth watering cuisine.

The Chinese New Year, also known as Spring Festival, is celebrated by families throughout China. It is regarded as a time of reunion and thanksgiving. The celebration was traditionally highlighted with a religious ceremony given in honour of the gods of the household.

Customary practices include the placing of red paper with propitious words on the doors and windows of homes and the preparation of special foods. Celebratory activities today include temple fairs and folk art performances such as lion and dragon dancing.
