NATIONAL INDIA DAYSunday 16 August 2009 Gauteng residents are invited to join the India Club for a celebration of India Day on Sunday 16th August. This colourful commemoration of the 63rd anniversary of Indian Independence Day (15th August), will take place at The Brightwater Commons from 11am to 2pm. The event will give the Indian community an opportunity to commemorate it's roots, whilst allowing westerners to experience the beauty, richness and diversity of the Indian culture. India Day will be presented by the India Club under the guidance and patronage of the High Commissioner and Consul General of India in South Africa. An extravagant entertainment programme will include various traditional dances like "Ghoomar" (a traditional dance of Rajasthan in Western India), "Santhali" (an Eastern Indian folk dance), and the enchanting Bhangra (of Punjab in Northern India). From the energetic moods of Lavani and Kolli dances to the classical and folk dance forms of Tamil Naduthe Bharatanatyam such will be the variety. As no celebration is complete without the flavour of Bollywood, the occasion will also feature an Oscar winning number from Rehman's Jai Ho. The programme will be interspersed with vocal performances by upcoming Indian musical stars in South Africa like Liata, Bhavesh, Rushel, Seema, Salma, Chandramouli, Saugata, Maithili - Natalie of Zee SA RE GA MA PA fame and Mani Suri. Other performance groups will include the Kashvita Music and Dance Academy; the Spicy Bollywood Dance Academy; and dance group "Sanskriti". The India Day celebrations will showcase the the diversity of the Indian culture and demonstrate its progression in South Africa.
