Oyster, Wine and Food Festival

Lovers of oysters and wine are invited to join The Brightwater Commons for its annual Oyster, Wine & Food Festival. This year's event will take place on Saturday 31st May and Sunday 1st June, opening from 11am to 6pm daily. Awaiting visitors will be an array of fresh succulent oysters, variety of fine wines, oyster recipes and other foods and beverages for sampling.

The grassy commons will be home to an "oyster shack" where fresh oysters can be obtained. Also situated in this area will be two "oyster islands" each offering a selection of mouthwatering oyster recipes to tantalize the taste-buds. Take a sip of oyster soup or sample an oyster tortilla complete with guacamole and salsa. Whilst shrimp and oyster wrapped in bacon is certain to be a taste sensation, sushi oysters are a must! In addition, will be some interesting alcoholic beverages including bloody Mary oyster and tequila oyster shots, amongst others.

Visitors can also enjoy demonstrations of various oyster recipes. These will be presented by Lehan Botha, Executive Chef of Legend Hospitality School and founder of Kettle Kings. The demonstrations will take place daily at the "oyster islands" at various times.

Oysters - Delicious & Nutritious

There are many ways in which oysters can be enjoyed. Though dedicated oyster aficionados prefer eating them on the half shell, served on crushed ice; they're also delicious in soups, stews, paella, pastas and an array of other dishes.

The best part about oysters is that they're nutritious. They contain vitamins A, B12 and C, as well as Omega 3 fatty acids linked to the reduction of heart disease; are rich in iodine and certain proteins; and low in saturated fats and carbohydrates. They're also a natural source of minerals such as calcium, copper, iron, and zinc.

Facts about oysters

When purchasing fresh oysters, ensure that they are alive. This can be done by tapping the shells which should be closed and remain so when tapped

Always keep oysters chilled prior to eating or cooking. Fresh oysters can be kept for up to two days whilst shelled oysters can be frozen for up to two months

Live oysters should be stored large side down, in an open container covered with a damp cloth. Do not place them in an air-tight container as they'll suffocate

Oysters should be cooked gently, just until the edges begin to curl. Over-cooking will make them "rubbery" and chewy

A popular accompaniment for fresh oysters is champagne. Crisp dry white wines are also ideal.
