Out Of Africa

Out of Africa, an event set to give local residents and tourists alike a genuine experience of African culture and heritage, will take place at The Brightwater Commons on Saturday 28th and Sunday 29th June. The event, to open from 11am to 5pm on Saturday and from 11am to 4pm on Sunday, will feature an array of exhibitions as well as an exciting entertainment programme.

Stepping onto the grassy commons, one will discover the richness and diversity of Africa through exhibitors representing various countries on the African continent. Whilst some will showcase traditional art and craft items typical of their specific countries, others will display clothing and accessories. From hand-carved ornaments, paintings, skins and shields to baskets, bags, beads and jewellery such will be the colourful variety. Each stall will be interactive with exhibitors, dressed in traditional attire, demonstrating the making of items displayed.

Visitors can also sample and taste various traditional African cuisine.

Forming part of the event will be an exciting entertainment programme. Whilst Saturday's line-up will include a performance by the popular Soweto String Quartet on the centre's promotion's stage (2pm to 4pm); a Tribal Show featuring Gumboot and various other forms of dancing will take place on the Sunday (12noon to 2pm). In addition will be a marimba band performance; Moyo face-painting; and a fashion show of African attire, jewellery and accessories (between 2pm and 3pm). Sunday's activities will culminate in a performance by renowned SA artist Abigail Kubeka, who'll grace the stage from 3pm.

Whilst the promotion's court will play host to an exhibition of 4 x 4's and related accessories ideally suited for trips through Africa; the grassy area opposite of Sheet Street will be dedicated to Africa's favourite sport of soccer. To participate in the 3-a-side matches, soccer fans can contact Kefi on 072 042 4327 for bookings. Also taking place in this area will be break-dancing and graffiti demonstrations; and a visit by DJ Lee of YFM on the Sunday.

The centre will be hosting a till-slip competition as part of Out of Africa, with the main prize being a 4 day, 3 night stay at Motswari Lodge to the value of R16 000. Visitors that spend R50 or more on that weekend can write their names and contact details on the backs of their till-slips and deposit them into one of the entry boxes in the centre.

Other prizes to be won will include 3 x one day extreme 4 x 4 trips for two people each; 5 extreme 4 x 4 prizes for five families (must have own 4 x 4); 3 prizes of a half-day (4 hours) on an extreme 4 x 4 route for two people each; and 2 prizes of a 4 hour intermediate 4 x 4 course (must have own 4 x 4).
