Archive 2004Randburg Waterfront - So what has changedThe Randburg Waterfront, initially a huge commercial success, over time and for various reasons, developed a poor reputation, necessitating a complete revamp. Our desire to create a centre that was welcoming and comfortable gave birth to The Brightwater Commons, based upon the philosophy of New Urbanism, which has now replaced the Randburg Waterfront. You may wonder, 'what is different? Actually it is completely different. From a psychological point of view, the harshness and subsequent feeling of alienation created by a large still body of water and flat warehouse type buildings, was examined and the old Waterfront has been transformed from a stark harbor and warehouse development into a welcoming small town streetscape. In addition various structural and architectural elements such as scale, cover, axes, circulation and vistas were also addressed. A typical mall, glorified in glass and marble, often perpetuates anonymous social interaction in a sterile and superficial space. The Brightwater Commons has a structured network promoting communication physically and visually. Instead of being channeled down a mall, pathways and axes facilitate circulation, places to walk are interconnected and sight lines will make you aware of the space, obviously or subliminally. The large body of water has been replaced by a pleasant natural grass area surrounded by a smaller stream where you can relax in the shade of a tree, picnic with the kids or take a peaceful stroll. It has been transformed into an escape from the hustle and bustle of the surrounding city where you can relax and do some shopping at a pace that suits you. Micha'el Frame, joint architect for The Brightwater Commons says " We are designing for a sense of wellbeing and creating an enabling framework for spontaneous social interaction. By virtue of the fact that you will be encircled by trees and breezes, water and sunlight, we have the ability to affect the psyche and encourage a positive sentiment from the moment you walk through the gates." There is still loads of entertainment at The Brightwater Commons which
makes it a great family place including; You are invited to enjoy dinner with family and friends, shop in a calm and friendly atmosphere, while away your time at the fabulous fleamarket searching for treasures and hidden delights or just relax on the lush lawn area of The Brightwater Commons. Come and see the new Brightwater Commons for yourself!
