A Retro Revival

Aren’t bell-bottoms, hot pants and platforms like from yesteryear? They seem to have made a comeback together with cat suits and three quarter pants, not to mention polka dots and stripes, with “Generation X” readily adopting them. We’re seeing a revival of the past, so to take shoppers on a trip down memory lane and give “Gen X” a further taste; The Brightwater Commons will be hosting Retro Revival.

Taking place at the centre from 27th to 30th November 2003, this celebration of the ‘good-old-days’ will feature exhibitions and entertainment activities ‘round the theme of retro. Cars - new, modern-retro and old classics; Vespas and motorbikes; pinball machines where visitors can play games; and long standing product brands are some of the displays that will jog one’s memory.

Retro Revival will also feature lifestyle and furniture exhibits from days gone by and a bungee trampoline in the commons area is sure to provide entertainment for younger visitors. The event’s highlight will be 94.7’s Tové Kane making a guest appearance and The BWC Retro Revival Show Band comprising of six of our country’s finest session musicians. With Tové as MC, the seven will provide musical entertainment with performances of popular 50’s, 60’s, 70’s and 80’s tunes on Saturday evening from 6pm to 8:30pm and Sunday afternoon from 1pm to 3pm.

Visitors who arrive for Saturday’s performance dressed as their favourite retro icon can stand a chance of winning an ET2 50 Vespa scooter. Costumed visitors can gather around the stage area in front of the musical fountains, where groups will be invited on stage. Ten finalists chosen by way of audiences voting will each be given a key and the one with the key that starts the Vespa will ride away with it.

As motorbikes are a typical retro item The Brightwater Commons will provide a departure point for the annual Motorcycle Toy Run on Sunday 30th November 2003. Bikers with their toys for underprivileged children can gather in the centre’s parking area at the Republic Road entrance between 7am and 10am for departure to the Wesbank Raceway. Once the toys have been deposited here, volunteers from Round Table, Rotary and Lions Club will sort and distribute them to underprivileged children all over South Africa.

Retro Revival – a celebration of the 50’s, swinging 60’s, flashy 70’s and 80’s is not to be missed. For more information contact The Brightwater Commons on +2711 789 5052.
